Little Dreams: Movie Nights For Displaced Children

Movie Night Volunteers Typhoon

Volunteers take office projectors (often unused) to disaster shelters and refugees, to show movies for displaced children.

“The direct benefit I saw after the disaster was bringing the community together, an escape for both children and parents, parents seeing their children laugh or even them laughing, some communities even thanked us for not forgetting about them.” – Amy Marshall, All Hands Volunteers

After Super Typhoon Haiyan, All Hands Volunteers went to Tacloban to respond to the disaster – building shelters, demolition, building homes and much more. But at night during their spare time, groups of volunteers would head out to the shelters with a projector and show Pixar and Disney movies.

Another example of this idea being used is when police barricaded the doors to a Hungarian train station, stopping aslym seekers/refugees from continuing their journey into Europe.

“Members of an events company set up a projector outside the Keleti station in the Hungarian capital. Yet for more than an hour on Wednesday night, boys and girls who had come to Budapest from Syria and other countries were able to forget the journey they had endured and the challenges ahead.” – The Independent
